On Friday, October 22, 2021 an Angel came down from Heaven and sealed the lips of our father, grandfather, great-grandfather and great-great grandfather, James Arthur Cook.
James A. Cook was born November 17, 1929 in Newberry, SC to the late Annie Mae Cook-Williams and the late Melvin Cook. He attended school in Newberry, SC and later met and married the love of his life the late Mary Alice Cook. They soon moved to Manhattan, New York. His passion and pride for cooking lead him to become a great chef in Manhattan, NY. He retired and moved back home to Newberry, SC where he returned to his childhood church, Pleasant Grove AME. He was an active member and did whatever was asked of him. He was famous for his green beans!
Those who predeceased him in death were his kids Charles F. Cook, Mary E. Cook, Margaret A. Cook and Ellen Cook.
Those left to cherish his memories are his daughters, Claudia Butler (Michael) Brooklyn, NY, Louvina Cook, Newberry, SC, sons, David Gillman and James Cook, Jr. both of Newberry, SC, grandchildren Ronald Cook, Shondell Cook, Chakira Cook, Nicole Cook, Cynthia Cook, Kia Sims, Arthur Cash, Michael Butler II of Brooklyn, NY, Thomas Cook of Newberry, SC Shatrina Stephens of Houston,TX. 27 great grandchildren,17 great-great grandchildren, one aunt, Lucy Sligh of Greensboro, NC, son-in-law Randolph Sims of Brooklyn, NY, several cousins and a host of family and friends.
A graveside service will be conducted on Friday, October 29, 2021 at 12:00 PM at Pleasant Grove AME Church. All in attendance are asked to wear a mask or face covering and to practice social distancing. Viewing will be held on Thursday, October 28, 2021 at the Fred B. Pratt Memorial Chapel from 1:00 PM to 6:00 PM.
