Deacon Emeritus Lewis J. Dawkins, Jr. was born May 12, 1939, in the Maybinton Community of Newberry County to the late Lewis J. Dawkins, Sr. and the late Rosa L. Dawkins Sligh. On Tuesday, November 21, 2023, he entered Eternal rest at Lexington Medical Center.
He was a member of Seekwell Baptist Church where he served as a Deacon until his retirement. He was a member of the Sons of Aid where he served as the secretary-treasurer for many years.
Lewis started his education in the two Historically Black Rosenwald schools in Maybinton: Seekwell and Trinity schools. He graduated from Gallman High in Newberry, SC class of 1956. He retired from Cone Mills Carlisle Finishing Plant. He loved photography, baseball and basketball.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by four brothers, Archie Lee Dawkins, Charles Dawkins, Allen Sligh and James Sligh.
He is survived by two sisters, Gloria Chapman of Newberry, SC and Linda Sligh of District Heights, MD; one aunt, Mildred Bailey of Ft. Washington, MD; special cousin/sister, Alice Hodges of Greenwood, SC; devoted cousin/friend, Betty Hawkins; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
A Memorial Service will be held on Sunday, December 3, 2023 at 1:00 pm at Seekwell Baptist Church.
