Welcome to the memorial page for

Larry Doby Tucker

October 15, 1949 ~ March 9, 2021 (age 71) 71 Years Old

Larry Doby Tucker was born on October 15, 1949 in the township of Maybinton, Newberry County, South Carolina to the late Daisy Hunter Tucker and Adolphus Tucker, Sr.

Larry, after a brief illness, departed this earthly life and entered into eternal rest on Tuesday, March 9, 2021 at the Cherokee Medical Center in Gaffney, South Carolina. He was preceded in death by his sister, Mariah and brother, Adolphus Jr.

Larry graduated from Gallman High School in 1967 and during his senior year was chosen by his classmates as the best looking male in his class.  Upon graduation, he enrolled at the University of South Carolina - Union Campus where he obtained a degree in Accounting.  After graduating college, Larry migrated to New York where he began his career as an Accountant at Bankers’ Trust Company. He was a quick learner and was promoted many times.  Often when Larry called in sick, his subordinates and colleagues would call him at home to inquire how to access an accounting program on the computer. Larry was familiar with and worked on many programming systems for the Bank long before many people were even aware that such technology existed.

In the early 70s, Larry was notified that he had been drafted to serve his country.  He chose the United States Air Force where he served with honor and distinction and was based primarily in Tokyo, Japan.  He went on many flying missions into Vietnam where the cargo on board was earmarked for soldiers on the ground.  Upon his discharge from the military, Larry returned to New York where he resumed his duties with Bankers‘ Trust Company.  During his stay in New York, Larry traveled the Caribbean extensively: Jamaica, Bermuda, Bahamas, Belize and Honduras.  He often, along with friends, would go on ski outings in the winter, not that he was a skier; Larry simply enjoyed being with friends whom he had met in the military and on the job.

In the early 1990s, his place of birth began to tug at his heart.  Therefore, he departed the bright lights of the City and returned to Maybinton, SC where he worked at a number of jobs but ultimately ended up at Georgia Pacific where he was employed as a Quality Assurance Inspector.  Larry retired in 2013 and began to enjoy the fruits of his labor.

Larry was an active member of Trinity AME Zion Church where he served in various capacities, which included: Trustee, Stewart and teaching Sunday School. Larry was a volunteer fireman at the Maybinton Fire Department until he retired on his 70th birthday.  He took his civic duties seriously and became a Poll Worker where he assisted at voting polls for a number of years during Primary and General Elections.

Larry was a kind-hearted and selfless persons who was always trying to help others, sometimes to his detriment.

Larry leaves behind to cherish his many memories his wife Betty Hall Tucker; one step-daughter, Sharrell Hardy, two step-sons: Alonzo Hardy (Gratha) and Henry Hardy; 16 step-grandchildren, 6 step-great grandchildren, 3 brothers: John Tucker (Ella Mae) Jonesville, SC; Marcelie Tucker (Joycelyn) Whitmire, SC; Charles Tucker (Learetha) Columbia, SC; 5 sisters: Sara Johnson, Charlottesville, Va; Senia Rice (Lewis) New York; Daisy Green (Eddie) Matthews, NC; Donzell Tucker-Nimrod, Carriacou, Grenada and Brooklyn, NY and Genelle Hawkins (Earl) Charlotte, NC; nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family and friends.
