I'm so sad to hear about Johnnie's passing. I saw his name come up in an email from the S.C. Press Association. Johnnie and I worked together for a brief time at the Marion Star & Mullins Enterprise in Marion County in the 1990s.
He was a great pressman. Every time he ran the press, I knew we were going to get a great product. He knew his craft, and he did his job with a strong sense of professionalism and humor.
It's hard to describe, but there's a connection between editors and press operators sometimes when you know that they know they're responsible for how good your work looks and how the community perceives the newspaper and your efforts to tell the truth.
Johnnie was a true partner in that effort, and I'm so sad to hear he's gone.
He was a great pressman. Every time he ran the press, I knew we were going to get a great product. He knew his craft, and he did his job with a strong sense of professionalism and humor.
