James William Smith

February 19, 1948 ~ October 20, 2020 (age 72) 72 Years Old

James William Smith, affectionately known as “Book” departed this earthly life and entered into eternal rest on Tuesday, October 20, 2020 at Lexington Medical Center.  Born in Peak, South Carolina, he was the son of the late James Sol Smith and the late Thelma Nelums Smith.

James was a faithful and devoted member of Pine Grove A.M.E. Church.  Prior to his illness, he served faithfully as a Steward and member of the Male Chorus for many years.

James was educated in the public schools of Newberry County, graduating from Gallman High School, Class of 1966, and earned an associate degree from Columbia Commercial College in 1977.  He served two years in the United States Army, one year of which was served in Vietnam.  He was employed with Allied/Honeywell for 30 years. After retiring from Honeywell he worked with Lexington School District Five as a bus driver for twelve years.  

James enjoyed family gatherings, spending time with his grandchildren, listening to Gospel music, and watching sports.  He especially liked football and was an avid Clemson fan.

Those who celebrate his life and cherish loving and precious memories are his loving wife of 47 years, Carolyn Patricia Smith; one daughter, Demetris Murray (Kenneth) of Chapin, SC; two sons, Rodney Mayers (Susan) of Bluffton, SC and Ricky Mayers (Shawn) of Chapin, SC; ten grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. He also leaves to cherish his memory, three brothers, James L. Wright of Pomaria, SC; Hulie Smith (Brenda) of Thomasville, NC; and Willie Smith (Mattie) of Winnsboro, SC; two sisters, Thelma L. Smith of Peak, SC and Shirley Richardson of Columbia, SC; two uncles, James Corley of Little Mountain, SC and Curtis Nelson (Leanner) of Hopkins, SC; one aunt, Minnie Douglas of Newberry, SC; one brother-in-law, Jeffery Mayers of Columbia SC; one sister-in-law, Twanda Mayers of McDonough, GA; nieces, nephews, cousins and friends, including, James Sims, George Bickley, and Henry Watson, all of whom grieve his departure but rejoice that he is resting with the Lord.

Graveside services will be conducted on Monday, October 26, 2020 at 11:00 AM at Pine Grove AME Church, Peak, SC with Military Honors.  All in attendance are asked to wear a mask or face covering and to practice social distancing.
