James Austin

Mr. James Austin, age 84, affectionately known as "Brut", passed away on Thursday, January 28, 2021 at The Regional Medical Center in Orangeburg, South Carolina.

Mr. Austin was born on March 12, 1936 in Whitmire, South Carolina to the late James F. Alston and the late Emma T. Alston.  In 1967 he moved to Harrisburg, PA.  When he returned to Newberry he joined Mt. Zion Baptist Church.  At the age of 16 he begin working for the RC Plant in Newberry.  He was also employed with Greenwood Mills for many years and retired from the Newberry Forestry Corp.

Mr. Austin was a humble man who enjoyed watching baseball, playing the guitar and the harmonica.

Mr. Austin was predeceased by a brother, Edward Alston, three sisters, Betty Tribble, Mary Caldwell and Lois Miller.

Surviving are his devoted wife, Eleanor Austin; his daughter, Theresa Austin with his former wife, the late Sarah Ann, one brother, David (Margaret) Alston, five sisters, Hazel Stukey, Quester West, Dorothy (Arthur) Holmes, Emma Lee (Gene) Williams and Linda Davis; three brothers-in-law, three sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.

A graveside service will be conducted on Monday, February 8, 2021 at Werts Cemetery at 2:00 PM.  All in attendance are asked to wear a mask or face covering and to practice social distancing.
