Mr. Griffin Mitchell III, entered into eternal rest on Friday, September 17, 2020. He was born in Newberry, South Carolina on March 7, 1949 to Mrs. Susie Mae Byrd Mitchell and the late George Mitchell Sr.

Griffin received his education at Drayton Street Elementary School graduating in May, 1963; U. S. Gallman High School graduating in May, 1967. Griffin continued his education at the South Carolina Area Trade School receiving his diploma in Heating and Air Conditioning.

Mr. Mitchell served his country with honor, loyalty and dedication in the U. S. Navy. He received one of the Navy’s honors when he became a Shellback. After serving his Country, Griffin received an Honorable Discharge and returned to Newberry.  

Griffin was a very hard working man who was dependable and loyal to his employers. During his work career, he was employed with numerous Heating and Air Conditioning firms in the Newberry area. Griffin did not like snakes and crawling under houses, so that career interest finally subsided. He worked at Georgia Pacific Plywood, where he served as the Union Shop Steward; SBFI Customized Desk Company, where he was sent to England to study new procedures for producing these customized desk; Good Scents Furniture Store and his last employer, Love Truck Stop.

Before developing health issues, Griffin was an avid hunter of deer and rabbits. He loved fishing with a passion. He has taught many of his friends how to fish, when and where to fish. He was very generous with helping and encouraging others to do better, to improve themselves. Griffin has impacted the lives of numerous people in Newberry and the surrounding area.

Griffin was predeceased by his loving wife of 44 years, Mrs. Jessie Price Mitchell approximately 16 months earlier last year.

Those who celebrate his life and cherish precious and loving memories include his mother, Mrs. Susie Byrd Mitchell, Newberry; his son Griffin Mitchell IV, Charleston, SC; Brothers, George Jr. (Dorothy), Newberry; Dolphus (Tammy), Springfield, VA; Jimmy (Lucile), Newberry; Darren “Bennie” Mitchell, Winnsboro; Sisters, Loretta Carter, Newberry; Susie Mance, Newberry; Ann (Joseph) Shokpeka, Atlanta, GA. Sister-In-Laws, Mary Suber, Newberry,; Trudy Price and Ella Williams, Columbus, OH and Brothers-In-Laws, Willie (Alfreda) Price and John Price, Newberry, SC.

Griffin was a caring man who loved people!! He will be truly missed by family and friends.

Graveside services will be conducted on Saturday, September 26, 2020 at 1:00 PM at Mt. Zion AME Church Cemetery in Jalapa, SC.  All attendance please wear a mask or face covering and to practice social distancing. Public viewing will be Friday, September 25, 2020 from 3:00-6:00 PM.
