Mr. George Mitchell, Jr. was born December 23, 1946 in Newberry, South Carolina to Susie Mae Byrd Mitchell and the late George Mitchell, Sr. He entered into Eternal Rest early on Saturday, March 5, 2022 at Prisma Health Baptist Hospital.
Mr. Mitchell was a member of Mt. Zion A. M. E. Church, Jalapa, SC. He was a graduate of Gallman High School Class of 1965. He was drafted that same year into the United States Army stationed at Fort Gordon, Georgia. He was deployed to Korea and at the completion of his tour was honorable discharged. He was a dedicated worker as a Supply Technician for 34 years at American Fiber and Finishing Company. Thereafter, he took a life long hobby and became an entrepreneur starting Mitchell's Photography. For the last 8 years, he worked as a Public Area Attendant with MRT Support Services retiring in December 2021.
Mr. Mitchell was a gentle, brilliant, kind and creative man. He was a devoted husband to Dorothy for 54 years, great Father and Grandfather who loved to travel with his family. He was an avid fisherman which he enjoyed with his family and friends. He was the treasurer of the Gallman High Reunion Committee Class of '65 for many years. He was well known all around and in the community as an Excellent Photographer.
Mr. Mitchell was predeceased by his Father, George Mitchell, Sr, a brother, Griffin Mitchell, mother-in-law, Princetta Young and father-in-law, James R. Young.
Mr. Mitchell is survived by his wife, Dorothy Young Mitchell, mother, Susie Mae Mitchell, daughters, Shirdara R. Mitchell Battle (Jeffery)(Columbia, SC)and Camille Ferguson(Louisville, KY); son, Monturious Mitchell (Michelle)(Columbia, SC), sisters, Elizabeth Carter(Newberry, SC), Susie Mance(Newberry, SC) and Mary Ann Shopeka(AP) (Gwinetta, GA)brothers, Darphaus Mitchell (Latonya)(Alexandria, VA), Jimmie Mitchell (Lucille)(Newberry, SC) and Bennie Mitchell(Newberry, SC); 22 grandchildren, 7 greatgrandchildren, 4 sisters-in-laws, 4 brothers-in-laws, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be conducted on Friday, March 11, 2022 at 1:00 pm at Shiloh A. M. E. Church with burial to follow in the church cemetery. Viewing will be held on Thursday, March 10, 2022 from 2:00 pm to 6:00 pm at the Fred B. Pratt Memorial Chapel. All in attendance are asked to wear a mask or face covering and practice social distancing.
