Edith (Bookman) Sweetenburg

March 13, 1933 ~ December 24, 2020 (age 87) 87 Years Old

Mrs. Edith B. Sweetenburg passed away on Thursday, December 24, 2020 at her home.

Edith B. Sweetenburg was born to the late Inez Robinson Bookman and Eugene Bookman on March 13, 1933.  She was  joyfully known to her family as "Tootsie" caught an early morning flight to be with the Lord on Christmas Eve, December 24, 2020.

She retired from Walter P. Rawls and Son after 46 years of service.  She was a long time member of  Mt. Hebron AME Church where she was a member of the Usher Board, Missionary Choir, and Gospel Choir while  working  faithful  until her health declined.  She loved visiting her family, church, helping others, red nail polish and red lipstick and keeping that contagious smile on her face. 

She was married to the late Claude T. Swittenburg for 68 years who preceded her  in death. To this union 11 children were born. 5 predeceased her in death Willie, Willie Mae , and Donna Swittenburg, Rosetta Glover and Shirley Wall.  She was also predeceased by sisters, Mary F.Swittenburg, Willie  Mae Cromer, Thelma Bookman, Joann Ruff, Rosa Lee Jones,  Naomi Wise, Laura Mae, Mary Edith Bookman, and Elizabeth Austin. Brothers, Malverse, George, Gene, and James Bookman. Grandchildren, Barbara and James Swittenburg , Teater Jackson, Tyrone Neal ,Kyrie Jenkins and Fallon Meggett.

Surviving to cherish her loving memories are daughters, Mary Swittenburg and Lula Mae Prince of Norristown PA , Emma Swittenburg (JW) of Clinton SC, Kathleen Meggett of  Newberry SC; sons, Claude (Emma)Swittenburg of Johnston SC. Gene (Barbara) Swiittenburg of  Newberry SC; three sisters, Mary D.Carol and Georgia Bookman of  Prosperity, SC; three brothers, Roy, Albert and Terry Bookman of Prosperity, SC; eighteen grandchildren, Debra Duffy, Felicia Williams, Cruz and Tanisha Swittenburg were reared in the home, thirty eight great-grandchildren and twenty five great-great-grandchildren; one aunt, Florence Stoudermire,  one uncle ,Willie Mack Stoudermire, one brother- in-law, Roger Ruff, devoted nephew, Butler (Arleen) Cromer, devoted caregivers Felicia Williams, Tanisha, Emma ,and Mary Swittenburg,  Destini and Kathleen Meggett .  Also a special thanks to Hospice of Laurens County  care team for their loving care provided to our family and mom during her time with them.

Graveside services will be conducted on Saturday, January 2, 2020 at 11:00 AM at Mt. Hebron AME Church.  All in attendance are asked to wear a mask or face covering and to practice social distancing.
