Dr. Gene Elizabeth Gary-Williams passed away suddenly on November 1, 2019, in Myrtle Beach, SC. 

Born April 25, 1936 in Newberry, SC, Gene was the beloved first daughter of the late Eugene Calvin Gary, and Erline Guess Gary.

Her life-long educational pursuit began in the South Carolina public school system, and spanned over 50 years to include Spelman College, University of Iowa, University of Maryland, and Howard University Divinity School.  Gene spent the majority of her adult life in the Washington, D.C. Metropolitan Area. Her academic focus on Allied Health Sciences developed into her career as a Physical Therapist, and Higher Education Administrator.

The majority of her life’s work was devoted to Howard University where she served in many capacities, but most notably as the Dean of the College of Allied Health Sciences.  Gene was involved in many professional organizations, and was a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. She was an avid sports buff, loved reading, gardening, and politics.

Dr. Gary-Williams is survived by her daughter, Gina McClain-Prather (Jeff Prather); sister, Gloria Gary Lawlah (John); grandchildren, Milalai McClain and Xavier McClain; niece, Gloria Lawlah-Walker; nephews, John Wesley Lawlah, IV (Terry), and Gary McCarrell Lawlah; a host of dear friends, relatives, and colleagues.  She is predeceased by her beloved daughter, Lynne Suzonne McClain, and her devoted husband, Aaron Clarence ‘Dink’ Williams.

A Memorial service will be held on December 7th beginning at 10am at Emory United Methodist Church, Washington, DC.
