Dorothy Ernestine Blair was born in Newberry April 1st, 1937 daughter of Sarah Blair(Rutherford) and Elbert Blair. She departed this life November 12, 2023.
At the age of 19 Dorothy left Newberry to join her mother and sister Essie in New York. There she attended classes and became a certified nurse's aide in White Plains. It was the beginning of a life dedicated to caring for others that would span 30 years. While working at White Plains Hospital she became very involved in the unionizing effort there. She was elected by the union members as their shop stewart. In time, she would step away from union activities and return to sole focus on medical work.
She loved to cook and to entertain family and friends at her home in New Rochelle, NY. She also enjoyed travel, especially home to Newberry to visit family.
In 2003, after losing her mother and later her sister Essie, Dorothy moved back to Newberry. She didn't stop caring for others, opening her home to two adults with disabilities over the next 10 years.
She is survived by daughters Sarah Blair Bowden and Norvelle Moss. Dorothy had one son, LeRoy Blair who predeceased her. She is also survived by one granddaughter, Lanette Eichelberger and two grandsons, Timothy and Jared Moss. Dorothy has two great-granddaughters, Carmen Moss and Chyanne Epps.
The remaining close family members from her sister Essie are nephew Eugene Rutherford and niece Katherine Wilson. Her grand nieces and nephews are Earl Wilson, Tanae James, Toy Gilliam, Jaden Hammond, Delores Mcallister, Theresa Massey, and Cedric Mitchell. She has a host of great grand nieces and nephews. She has several cousins here in Newberry as well.
Dorothy lived a long healthy, active life. She never lost her sharp wit or clarity of mind. Her illness was serious but short relative to the blessing of her time with us.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held on Friday, December 1, 2023 at 11:00 am at the Fred B. Pratt Memorial Chapel.
