Deacon Charles Edward Boyd, Sr. was born July 12, 1951, in Newberry, South Carolina. He was the son of the late Deacon Andrew Larkin Boyd, Sr., and Deaconess Anna Lee McMorris Boyd of Newberry, South Carolina. Deacon Boyd departed this life on Friday, December 15, 2023, to be with the Lord.

Deacon Boyd graduated from Gallman High School (Class of 1969) in Newberry, SC. He was also a graduate of Piedmont Technical College (Class of 1973) in Greenwood, South Carolina, where he majored in Air Conditioning/Refrigeration and Heating Technology. Deacon Boyd dedicated his life to Christ, the church, and his family. At an early age, he was baptized and joined Bush River Missionary Baptist Church in Newberry, South Carolina, where he served actively as a Teacher in the Sunday School Department and as the Sunday School Superintendent for many years. He later became a member of Antioch Missionary Baptist Church in Hartsville, South Carolina, where he served actively as a member of the Deacon


In addition to his many church and community responsibilities, Deacon Boyd always loved spending time with his family and friends and maintaining his yard.

Charles, affectionately nicknamed “Chilly”, because of his cool and calm demeanor, was a man of many talents and interests. He was a music lover. He loved all music genres and played trombone in his high school band. He was a very good artist, and he completed many art and drawing classes. He loved sports. He played football in high school and was a die-hard Dallas Cowboys fan.

Deacon Boyd loved and was very proud of his children, Jessica and CJ. He was ecstatic and elated with the birth of his grandson, Kai. Even during his illness, he always encouraged them to do their best.

In 1991, Charles met the love of his life, Barbara, who is affectionately called “Cookie.” After a wonderful courtship, they were married on December 4, 1993, and were able to enjoy 30 years of marriage.

Deacon Boyd worked for Oscar Mayer Food Corporation in Newberry, SC, for many years, as well as other companies in Newberry and the Pee Dee Region, culminating with his employment with Walmart in Hartsville, SC, where he was respected and loved by his co- workers, management, and the thousands of customers he greeted and interacted with. He continued to serve his church and family.

Deacon Boyd was preceded in death by his parents, Deacon and Deaconess Andrew L. Boyd, Sr.; parents-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Thomas K. O’Neal; two sisters-in-law, Odessie R. Boyd and Glendora Boyd and one niece, Audrey V. Boyd, and a host of other relatives.

In addition to his devoted wife of 30 years, Reverend Barbara Boyd, his humble spirit, calm demeanor, and infectious smile will be missed by his daughter, Jessica Boyd of Darlington, SC; son, Charles E. Boyd, Jr. of New London, CT, grandson, Kai Boyd of New London, CT; brothers, Deacon Andrew L. Boyd, Jr. of Piedmont, SC, Mr. Robert L. Boyd of Newberry, SC, Dr. Willie E. (Patricia) Boyd, Sr. of Darlington, SC, Mr. John A. Boyd of Newberry, SC, and Deacon/Colonel(Ret.) Larry C. (Paula) Boyd, Sr. of Florence, SC; sister-in-law, Joyce Boyd of Baltimore, MD; sister-in-law, Wanda O’Neal Beedles (Howard) of St. Albans, NY; and a host of aunts, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Homegoing Service Celebrating the Life of Deacon Charles Edward Boyd, Sr. will be on Thursday, December 21, 2023 at 12:00 pm at Antioch Missionary Baptist Church, 2334 West Old Camden Road, Hartsville, SC  29550.  Interment will follow in the church cemetery.
