John Sweetenburg

Funeral services for Mr. John "Sweetney" Sweetenburg, age 78, will be conducted on Thursday, February 28, 2019 at 2:00 PM at Mt. Hebron AME Church.  Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Mr. Sweetenburg passed away on Thursday, February 21, 2019 at his home.  He was born in Prosperity, South Carolina to the late Emory Sweetenburg and the late Sarah Ellen Counts Bookman.  He attended Mt. Hebron AME Church.  Mr. Sweetenburg was a retired truck driver with Bookman Trucking, Inc.

Mr. Sweetenburg was predeceased by a son, James Frederick Cromer; ten brothers, Preston Bookman, Steve Bookman, George Bookman, Furman Bookman, Randolph Sweetenburg, Rufus Sweetneburg, Larry Sweetenburg, Johnnie Sweetenburg, Roger Sweetenburg and Gregory Sweetenburg; two sisters, Dorothy Mae Cannon and Daisy Lee Sweetenburg.

Surviving are his faithful and devoted companion of 45 years, Lessie Boyd; sons, Benjamin Boyd, Sr. (Crystal) of Newberry, SC; Jonathan Boyd and Robin Ruff of Pomaria, SC; Clayry Penny of Prosperity, SC; daughters, Lisa Ruff of Prosperity, SC; Jacqueline Williams (David), Cynthia Boyd, Teresa Boyd and Lucy Wise all of Newberry, SC; sister, Mary Nell Wise of Prosperity, SC; brothers, Richard Bookman (Bessie), Emory Sweetenburg, Jr. (HattieMae), Kenneth Sweetenburg, Heyward Sweetenburg, Raymond Sweetenburg and Stanley Sweetenburg all of Newberry, SC; sisters-in-law, Mattie Bookman, Judy Bookman, Lashonda Sweetenburg and Patricia Sweetenburg; brother-in-law, Willie Ray Cannon; one aunt, Willie L. Houseal; 24 grandchildren, eleven great-grandchildren, a host of nieces, nephews and cousins.
