John Henry Chalmers

Funeral services for Mr. John H. Chalmers, age 74, will be conducted on Friday, April 20, 2018 at 1:00 PM at Old Beaverdam Baptist Church.  Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Mr. Chalmers passed away on Sunday, April 15, 2018 at Palmetto Health Richland.  Born in Newberry County, he was the son of the late James Chalmers and the late Eunice Ida Butler Chalmers.  He was a member of Old Beaverdam Baptist Church.

Mr. Chalmers was a 1963 graduate of Gallman High School where he participated in many school functions.  Upon his high school graduation, he relocated to Washington, D. C.  For 34 years he worked at George Washington University; he also worked at St. John's Episcopal Church for 31 years as a sexton and was able to work with several Presidents from Lyndon B. Johnson to Bill Clinton.  He touched many lives and maintained many friends because of the lives he influenced.

Mr. Chalmers was also a member of Sons of Aide Society #18, Redemption Lodge #24, St. John's Redemption Lodge #7, Masonic Temple, John Davis Consistory #1 and Redemption Chapter #14 of Eastern Star.

Surviving are his children, Deirdra (Johnny) Peake of Clinton, SC; Sandra (Darrell) Douglas of Newberry, SC; Carleen Chalmers of Washington, DC; Joan Spears of Suitland, MD; Eunice (Duran) Phillips of Aston, PA; Anthony (Bonita) Kellum and Carl (Latonia) Chalmers of Winston-Salem, NC; 27 grandchildren, 34 great-grandchildren, a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and loving friends.
