Rudolph "Rudy" Caldwell

Graveside services for Mr. Rudolph "Rudy" Caldwell will be conducted on Saturday, March 7, 2015 at 2:00 PM at Werts Cemetery.

Rudy passed away on Monday, March 2, 2015.  Born in Newberry County, he was the son of the late James E. Caldwell, Sr. and the late Sarah Speaks Caldwell. He was an active member of St. Monica's Episcopal Church.

He was a graduate of Gallman High School Class of 1956 and attended South Carolina State University where he played football and baseball.  During the 1970s, he was employed at Newberry Recreation Department as Director of  McSwain St. Park and swimming pool, Vincent St. Park, and Wise St. Park.  He coordinated block dances, sporting and recreational events for the African American youth in Newberry.  He also worked closely with Special Olympics and the Neighborhood Youth Corp (NYC).  He was recognized as an Outstanding Young Man of America for his tireless efforts during this time period.  Rudy then was employed at South Carolina Division of Parks, Recreation, and Tourism where he was instrumental in helping to design many parks around the state of SC.  He later retired as a Recreation Coordinator for the SC Department of Corrections.   

Rudy was predeceased by one sister, Shirley C. Lee; two brothers, Odell Caldwell and Dr. Manus B. Caldwell.

Surviving are one son, Norman T. "Pixie" Caldwell of Newberry, SC; one daughter, Toriah J. Caldwell of Columbia, SC; two sisters, Sarah C. Coleman of Whitmire, SC; Betty C. Schumpert (Jimmie); two brothers,  Reverend James E. Caldwell, Jr. (Rozell), Randy E. Caldwell (Mary Helen) all of Newberry, SC; sister-in-law Jerushia G. Caldwell; brother-in-law Clifford Lee; special friend, Elizabeth Adams; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, family and friends.
